Common Toe Conditions: A Guide to Toe Pain and Discomfort

The toes contain numerous small joints, bones, tendons and surrounding soft tissues that work together during standing and walking. Problems affecting any of these structures can lead to pain, stiffness, pressure or changes in toe position.

Toe conditions can also look similar or occur together. A bunion, for example, may crowd neighbouring toes, while arthritis can affect several joints throughout the feet and toes. Identifying where the problem is located and how the toe has changed can help you find the most relevant collection.

Arthritis in the Toes

Arthritis causes pain, swelling and stiffness within one or more joints and can affect the feet and toes. Different forms of arthritis behave differently: osteoarthritis involves gradual joint changes, rheumatoid arthritis commonly affects smaller joints including those of the feet, while gout frequently causes sudden symptoms around the big-toe joint.

Toe arthritis may make bending the joints uncomfortable and can cause stiffness during walking or after periods of rest.

Symptoms that repeatedly flare or restrict normal activity should be properly assessed rather than assumed to be ordinary foot fatigue.

Our Arthritis collection brings together products intended to improve comfort and support feet affected by joint pain, swelling and stiffness.

Bunions

A bunion, also known as Hallux Valgus, develops around the joint at the base of the big toe. It creates a prominent bump on the inner side of the foot, while the big toe may gradually angle towards the smaller toes.

Pressure from footwear can make the area sore, swollen or irritated, particularly during walking. As the toe changes position, it can also reduce the space available for neighbouring toes and contribute to crowding or overlap.

Non-surgical measures are mainly used to reduce pressure and improve comfort; they do not permanently remove the underlying bunion.

The dedicated Bunion collection includes separators, protectors, pads and corrective supports for different symptoms and stages of the condition.

Bunionettes

A bunionette, or tailor's bunion, is similar to a bunion but develops at the opposite side of the foot. The prominence forms around the base of the little toe rather than the big toe.

The little-toe joint may become sore when it rubs against footwear, and the fifth toe can sometimes move towards the neighbouring toe. This can contribute to crowding, corns, calluses and discomfort along the outside of the forefoot.

Our Bunionette collection focuses specifically on cushioning this area, reducing friction and creating more comfortable spacing around the smaller toes.

Hammer Toes

A hammer toe is a change in the position of one of the smaller toes where the middle joint becomes bent instead of remaining relatively straight. It most commonly affects the second toe but can occur in any of the lesser toes.

The raised joint can press against the top of the shoe, while the tip of the toe may experience additional pressure against the ground. Corns, calluses, soreness and stiffness can develop as a result.

Hammer toes can initially remain flexible but may become increasingly fixed over time. Conservative products generally focus on cushioning pressure, reducing crowding or supporting a more comfortable position while worn rather than permanently straightening a rigid deformity.

Browse the Hammer Toe collection for products specifically intended for bent and crowded toes.

Overlapping Toes

An overlapping toe occurs when one toe crosses partly or completely over a neighbouring toe. The problem can affect different toes and may occur alongside other deformities, including bunions and hammer toes.

Overlapping can create pressure where the toes touch one another or where a raised toe rubs against footwear. This may result in irritation, redness, corns or calluses.

When the toes remain flexible, separators, wraps and protective cushioning may help create space and improve comfort while worn. A rigid or increasingly painful overlap is less likely to respond to simple positioning products and may benefit from professional assessment.

Our Overlapping Toes collection includes different approaches for toe spacing, protection and reducing friction.

Ingrown Toenails

Unlike the conditions above, an ingrown toenail affects the nail and surrounding skin rather than the position of the toe joint.
It occurs when the side of a toenail grows into the skin, most commonly affecting the big toe. The area can become painful, red and swollen, and infection may develop in more severe cases.

Correct nail care is particularly important. Toenails should generally be cut straight across rather than very short or rounded deeply into the corners, and footwear should provide sufficient room around the toes.

Our Ingrown Toenails collection includes nail-care and protective products intended to make caring for affected or sensitive toes easier.

More Than One Toe Problem?

Toe conditions do not always occur in isolation.

A bunion can push the big toe towards its neighbours and contribute to overlapping or crowded toes, while hammer toes and other lesser-toe deformities can occur alongside bunions. Arthritis can also affect toe joints and contribute to pain or changes in mobility.

If several symptoms are present, focus on the condition causing the greatest pain or difficulty rather than assuming that one product needs to address everything.

Looking After Painful or Sensitive Toes

Whatever the underlying condition, reducing unnecessary pressure around the toes can make everyday footwear more comfortable.

Helpful measures may include:

  • Choosing shoes with enough width and depth around the toes
  • Avoiding footwear that repeatedly presses against prominent joints
  • Using appropriate cushioning where rubbing occurs
  • Keeping the feet and toenails clean and well cared for
  • Cutting toenails straight across rather than excessively short
  • Seeking professional advice when pain persists or the toe continues to change shape

Roomier footwear is commonly recommended for bunions and lesser-toe deformities, while correctly fitting shoes can also help reduce irritation around an ingrown toenail.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can cause pain in the toes?

Toe pain has many possible causes. Joint conditions such as arthritis, structural changes such as bunions and hammer toes, crowding between overlapping toes and problems around the toenail can all cause discomfort.

The location and type of symptoms can provide clues, but persistent or unexplained toe pain should not be self-diagnosed.

How can I tell the difference between these toe conditions?

The appearance and location of the problem can help:

  • A bump beside the big-toe joint may indicate a bunion.
  • A bump beside the little-toe joint may be a bunionette.
  • A smaller toe bent at its middle joint may be a hammer toe.
  • A toe crossing over another toe is an overlapping toe.
  • Pain and swelling around the edge of a nail may indicate an ingrown toenail.
  • Painful, swollen or stiff joints may be associated with arthritis

These are general descriptions rather than a diagnosis.

Can toe separators permanently straighten toes?

Toe separators can create space, reduce friction and hold flexible toes in a different position while they are being worn. They may be useful for conditions including bunions and overlapping toes, but they should not be expected to permanently correct a fixed structural deformity.

Can different toe conditions occur together?

Yes. Bunions can occur alongside overlapping or hammer toes, and arthritis may affect joints that are already experiencing other structural problems.

This is why the same cushioning or separating products may sometimes appear in more than one condition collection.

When should I get toe pain checked?

Seek professional advice when pain is persistent or worsening, a toe becomes increasingly rigid or deformed, walking becomes difficult, or recurring corns and skin damage develop.

An ingrown toenail should also be assessed if it becomes very painful, swollen or produces pus, particularly if you have diabetes. Sudden severe joint pain with redness, heat or swelling also warrants medical assessment.
