Stress Fractures

Stress fracture products can help reduce pressure and improve comfort around the foot while an injury heals. Our collection includes supportive insoles, metatarsal pads, arch supports, heel cushioning and other inserts for different areas of the foot. These products should complement appropriate medical assessment and recovery rather than replace treatment for a suspected fracture.

Stress Fractures Buying Guide

A stress fracture develops when repeated strain on a bone causes a small break to form over time, rather than resulting from one sudden injury.

In the foot, they commonly affect the metatarsal bones running through the forefoot, although other bones can also be involved. Running, jumping and a sudden increase in physical activity are common triggers.

Stress fractures can also occur when normal activity places repeated strain on a bone that has become weaker, such as with osteoporosis.

Unlike general foot aches, a stress fracture requires time for the bone to heal. Cushioning and support products may improve comfort or help distribute pressure, but they do not repair the fracture themselves.

What Does a Stress Fracture Feel Like?

Typical symptoms of a foot stress fracture can include:

  • A dull or aching pain in a specific area of the foot
  • Pain that becomes worse during walking, running or other weight-bearing activity
  • Symptoms that improve with rest
  • Swelling around the affected area
  • Localised tenderness when pressure is applied directly over the injured bone

Symptoms often develop gradually rather than following a single obvious accident.

Because several foot conditions can cause similar pain, it is important not to assume that unexplained forefoot or heel pain is simply a stress fracture. A healthcare professional can assess the injury and determine whether further investigation is needed.

Which Products May Help During Recovery?

Products should be chosen according to where the fracture is located, how much weight-bearing is permitted and the advice you have received from your healthcare professional.

Some stress fractures require an orthopaedic boot, rigid-soled footwear or crutches to reduce the load through the injured bone.

Supportive Insoles

Supportive insoles can provide additional cushioning beneath the foot and distribute pressure across a wider area.

Our collection includes full-length and half-length insoles with shaped arch support, heel cups and shock-absorbing materials.

May suit:

  • People returning to normal footwear during recovery
  • Shoes with limited built-in cushioning
  • Those who have been advised that normal weight-bearing is appropriate
  • People wanting broader support beneath the heel, arch and forefoot

An insole should not be used as a substitute for a protective boot or other offloading device when one has been recommended.

Metatarsal Pads and Cushions

Many foot stress fractures occur within the metatarsal bones, making the forefoot an important area to protect during recovery.

Metatarsal pads provide cushioning around the ball of the foot and can redistribute pressure away from sensitive areas. Our collection includes both sleeved and gel cushioning designs.

However, positioning is important. A pad placed directly beneath a painful fracture could increase pressure rather than relieve it, so use one only when it feels comfortable and is appropriate for your injury.

Arch Supports

Arch-support pads and braces provide targeted support beneath the middle of the foot.

They may be useful when you are returning to everyday footwear and want additional structure beneath the arch without replacing the entire insole.

The support should feel comfortable and should not increase pain around the injured area.

Heel Cups and Cushioning

When discomfort is located around the rear of the foot, a heel cup can add shock-absorbing cushioning beneath the heel.

Our collection includes gel heel cushions and contoured heel cups designed to soften impact and distribute pressure.

Heel cushioning may improve comfort, but a suspected heel-bone stress fracture should still be professionally assessed before relying on inserts or pads.

Helping a Stress Fracture Heal

Reducing the repeated load that caused the injury is one of the most important parts of recovery.

Depending on the location and severity of the fracture, management may include:

  • Reducing or stopping the activity that caused the injury
  • Limiting weight-bearing where advised
  • Wearing a rigid-soled shoe or orthopaedic boot
  • Using crutches if required
  • Applying a wrapped cold pack for short-term pain relief
  • Maintaining gentle foot and ankle movement where appropriate
  • Switching temporarily to lower-impact activity that does not cause pain

Supportive footwear and cushioning can become more useful as you progress through recovery and begin returning to normal walking.

Returning to Walking, Running and Sport

Returning too quickly to the activity that caused a stress fracture can place the healing bone under excessive load again.

People who are symptom-free may begin a gradual return to lower-impact sport after around six weeks, increasing one aspect of activity at a time. Individual recovery times vary, however, so your own symptoms and clinical advice should take priority.

When returning to activity, consider:

  • Increasing distance and intensity gradually
  • Wearing suitable, supportive footwear
  • Avoiding sudden jumps in running or training volume
  • Stopping if localised bone pain returns
  • Allowing adequate recovery between higher-impact sessions

If the stress fracture was related to sport, it is also worth considering whether changes in training volume, technique or footwear contributed to the original overload.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes stress fractures in the foot?

Stress fractures usually develop when a bone is repeatedly loaded faster than it can recover. Running, jumping and sudden increases in physical activity are common causes.

They can also occur when bones are weakened by conditions such as osteoporosis.

Where do foot stress fractures usually occur?

The metatarsal bones in the front of the foot are among the most common locations for foot stress fractures, although other bones in the foot and heel can also be affected.

Can I walk on a stress fracture?

It depends on the location and severity of the injury.

Some people can continue limited walking while modifying their activities, while others need a rigid-soled shoe, orthopaedic boot, crutches or reduced weight-bearing.

Follow the advice given for your particular fracture rather than trying to walk through increasing pain.

Do insoles help stress fractures?

Insoles can provide cushioning and redistribute pressure as you return to normal footwear, but they do not heal the fracture.
If you have been advised to wear a boot, rigid shoe or use crutches, an ordinary insole should not be used instead.

Are metatarsal pads suitable for a stress fracture?

A metatarsal pad may help redistribute pressure around the forefoot in some circumstances, particularly later in recovery.
It should not place extra pressure directly beneath the injured bone. If using a pad makes the area more painful, stop using it and seek professional advice.

How long does a stress fracture take to heal?

Recovery depends on the bone affected, the severity of the injury and how effectively the area can be protected from repeated loading.

Some people can begin gradually returning to lower-impact activity at around six weeks once symptoms have settled, although foot discomfort can persist for longer.

When should I seek medical advice?

A suspected fracture should be properly assessed rather than treated solely with inserts or cushioning.

Seek urgent advice if you have severe pain, cannot walk, the foot has changed shape, you heard a snap or grinding noise, or the foot becomes hot and swollen. NHS guidance recommends contacting 111 if you think you may have broken a bone in your foot or toes.
